EV Runs Out of Charge on the Road: What Should You Do? ⚡

Что делать, если электромобиль разрядился в пути?

A fully discharged electric vehicle is an unpleasant situation, but it is not critical. If your EV runs out of charge on the road, the most important thing is not to try to drive a few more kilometers at any cost, but to act calmly, safely, and step by step.

1. Stop in a safe place 🚨If the battery level is rapidly approaching 0%, reduce your speed, avoid sudden acceleration, and look for a safe place to stop. Turn on your hazard lights and, if possible, move the vehicle off the roadway.

2. Find the nearest charging station 📍Check a charging station map or your charging operator’s app. Distance is not the only thing that matters: pay attention to the connector type, charging power, and availability of the charging point.

It is better to find two stations right away — a primary option and a backup. This way, you will have a Plan B if the first station is occupied or unavailable.

3. If the car can no longer move, call for assistanceWhen the battery is completely discharged, the simplest option is roadside assistance or a tow truck. When requesting assistance, make sure to mention that you have an electric vehicle and provide its make and model.

⚠️ Do not tow an EV with a rope without first checking the manufacturer’s instructions. Some models have restrictions on towing with the wheels on the road. In many cases, a flatbed tow truck is the safest option.

4. Check for mobile EV charging 🔋In some cities, mobile EV charging services are available. A specialized vehicle can come to your location and provide a small amount of energy — enough to reach the nearest charging station.

This may be more convenient than transporting the vehicle by tow truck.

5. Do not rely on a “hidden reserve” after 0%Some electric vehicles may have a small energy buffer after the battery indicator reaches 0%. However, it is impossible to predict exactly how far the vehicle will still be able to travel. It depends on the model, temperature, battery condition, and other factors.

So the rule is simple: 0% is a signal to stop, not to test the limits of your remaining range.

💡 How can you avoid this situation? On long trips, do not plan your route down to the last percentage point of battery charge. Take the weather and real-world energy consumption into account, check charging stations in advance, and keep a sufficient reserve to reach the next charging point.

Most importantly, always have a Plan B with an alternative charging option. It is one of the simplest habits that can make EV travel much less stressful.
